“The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. The life without color, pain or past.” ― Lois Lowry, The Giver
This new urban fabric (infrastructure) started by the definition of contrast, lightness and darkness among city’s textile and façade. The project aims to create a new ways, which Bangkok City could be read by the use of tools in this case an infrastructure.
The idea of the project is framed through research and analysis of Gotham City. This imaginary city has been created and portrayed in various forms, by several artists, directors and illustrators. However ideological and representative values of contradiction have been consistently depicted in each variation. The city as a dark dangerous place has been represented through notions of contrast, form, color and abstraction to express the pressed against the citizens of Gotham.
As a relief against the darkness, the figure of light is placed as central element. In Gotham City Batman embodies the symbol of lightness within this dark and sinful place.
How does this notion of lightness and darkness from the imaginary city reflect Bangkok metropolis? I have defined darkness of Bangkok in reference to its infrastructure, wires and cables wrap and the rustic textures of urban façade. Pollution and unorganized arrangement of the buildings and colors makes, Bangkok’s color turn grey. In response to this condition, the project defines the idea of light as an artificial light, with potential to create a new layer on top of the new one. The construction of light and contrast as such offers the potential to create spaces in the city and offer new perspectives for collective spectacle. The idea of lightness within this project has been applied by means of technology of projection mapping and artificial light. These forms and technologies allow for easy and comprehensive adaptation and construction among realm of the city, creating fragments to represent light in many forms and colors. These instances could be referred to as layers of the imaginary world or a world that we wanted to exist in Bangkok.
The Application of this idea to Bangkok city in the first step I have to find the definition of pause or the way that these lighting infrastructures could exist (or already exist) among the commuted area, and how it would effect people on human eye’s level. The study of the first territorial map was concerning in topic of human scale relating to the urban scale especially in the case of Bangkok. The ways that obstacle were located among the perspective of the city from street view, which is almost the opposite of the example from Paris site visit that shape the idea of project in the urban scale in the final phase. The city of Paris has the extreme use of the perspective to create the hierarchy of spaces such as monuments or government buildings, which actually become the factors that define the city itself. So it struck me these kind of arrangement and planning of the city create a public space and suddenly the culture of “using” the public space, which Bangkok on the other hand does not have due to climate, city planning, activities etc.
The evaluation of this new infrastructure was trying to capture how the idea of light of “Canvas” in the matter of construction and the reaction of people. As you can see that the small experimental project, which happened in Bangkok on the street level is the prove that the infrastructure can really work, create an impact on people among the streets into, and could become fragments on larger scale of the city located in the important parts or tourist spots, which become the final product of the idea of this “Lighting Canvas” in terms of scale and placement among the existing textile.
Final phase of the design is concerning on the factor of effect of this new “Layers” or infrastructure toward people, and the way that structure could be construct and deconstruct, because that concept of the “Canvas” is to act as a temporal installation. So the territory of the overall area of this machine has been refined to serve as a fragment, and create network of Bangkok Metropolis.
