Phase 3 Ubanus: The Idea of the City

One of the cities with such contrast identities is Bangkok. As beauty in preserved culture

of Thailand is its uniqueness, the new value perceived is for being the city of light, fun, and extreme. As we can

see, whenever people speak about Bangkok, besides the famous temples, nice and humble characteristic of the

population, and the most delicious food in the world, the growth in its diversification of activities and attractions

are the reason why people pay more interest in the city nowadays. During the daytime, wide ranges of services

are available in every square inch of the city, ranging from street markets to high-end shopping malls and

department stores, street food to rooftop Michelin stars restaurants, homestay to five-star hotels, etc. Moreover,

the city never sleeps. 24/7 stores are around the corner, while different extreme activities are provided. Clubbing,

Sexual services and shows, and night markets represent the darker parts of Bangkok’s famous identities.

MAP ANALYSIS

As shown in the map, four places with four styles about nightlife in Bangkok are illustrated delicately into

details. The first one is Kaosarn Road, which is perceived as the most famous street for night markets and local clubs,

whereas Thonglor provides similar activities but for higher class as there are less street food and more formal

restaurants and high-end clubs. Patpong represents various kinds of sexual services and Soi Cowboy is famous

for extreme sexual shows.

PERSPECTIVE COLLAGE

Another illustration reflects the result of my hypothesis. In the foreground, walls are leading inside, as the

things behind the walls show differences in characteristics and the mixture of various activities. Beyond the

foreground, there lies another wall that we cannot really see what it is hiding behind. In other words, looking from

the exterior will not lead to the answer of what the interior holds. The differences in those realities behind the first

and the second wall that are hard to tell reflect the city we are living in, but with good organization for the sake of

representing every identities it has. During the night time, Bangkok are perceived as the sin city full with lights and

fun, the city that never sleeps, but in the day time, beauty in its uniqueness of preserved culture and developed

civilizations are still remained.
