Phase 1: Precedent Study, Ingalls Skating Rink and Suan Amporn Pavilion

Ingalls Skating Rink

The Ingalls Ice Arena was designed by Eero Saarinen which is used for ice hockey known as the Yale Whale. It is located on Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut which finished constructing on 1958.

The structure for this building consists of the backbone reinforced concrete, together with side arches which connected by Aluminium cables for holding up 3 pieces together. The wood roof structure is supported by aluminum cables following by crossed Aluminium cables which supported in the perpendicular way. The use of the wood roof is for absorbing the sound inside while the metal framing on top is for resisting the snow load. The exterior cable was building during the construction process in order to help resist the wind load.

Suan Amporn Pavilion

In the 1970s, due to the economic growth and rising population in 1970s which led ever larger product fairs and festival in the city, there is a demand for multi-purpose building for exhibiting those fairs and festivals. Suan Amporn was the place for exhibiting motor show before it was moved to exhibit at BITEC Bangna.

It was design by Krisada Arunwong na Ayutthaya corperated with Amorn Sriwong which completed constructing in 1972. It was spectacular in that period in terms of structural system which spanned over 15 meters without existing columns by the advantage point of the folded plate roof which help supporting the building in itself and provided a great sun shading.
