Fun Palace was the brainchild of theatre director Joan Littlewood and architect Cedric Price in 1961. After the Second World War, the United Kingdom’s recovering economy along with the new industrial technology caused a large portion of the population to become unemployed, creating the new concept of ‘leisure time’.
Fun Palace was intended to be an open system allowing for ultimate freedom of leisure and creativity, where people can spend their time in any way they please. The building was just a system that allowed this to happen. An original blueprint for the project read:
“Choose what you want to do – or watch someone else doing it. Learn how to handle tools, paint, babies, machinery, or just listen to your favourite tune. Dance, talk or be lifted up to where you can see how other people make things work. Sit out over space with a drink and tune in to what’s happening elsewhere in the city. Try starting a riot or beginning a painting – or just lie back and stare at the sky.”
